Hoisin steak stir fry

Hoisin Steak Stir-Fry

Healthy and quick to make

We previously shared a recipe for stir-fried steak bites with broccoli in soy sauce.

Since we love stir-fries ourselves because they’re often healthy and quick to make, another version was only a matter of time. This time, we’re making a delicious combination of steak strips with hoisin sauce. Hoisin sauce has a rich, slightly sweet, savory flavor that’s unlike any other sauce. It adds a deep umami flavor to the dish and really can’t be replaced.

Stir-fry ingredients

The perfect marinade

To make the steak strips extra tender and flavorful, we marinate them in a mixture of oyster sauce and soy sauce. This not only adds great flavor but also helps keep the meat tender while it cooks. You can marinate the beef for a short time, but if you have a little extra time, letting it sit longer will give it even more flavor. Want to switch things up? Use steak bites or boneless, skinless chicken thighs instead of beef strips.

Vegetables of your choice

In this recipe, we combine the steak strips with crisp mushrooms and red bell pepper. One of the best things about stir-fries is how easy they are to customize with different vegetables. Broccoli, bok choy, sugar snap peas, or even zucchini all work well. If you like a little heat, add a few slices of red chili pepper. For extra crunch, sprinkle the dish with toasted cashews or sesame seeds.

Serve with rice or noodles

No stir-fry is complete without the right side. Serve these Hoisin Steak Stir-Fry with steamed white rice for a classic pairing, or choose (udon) noodles if you’re in the mood for a heartier meal. Brown rice or even cauliflower rice are also great options if you’d like to keep the dish a little lighter. Finish with some extra sliced green onions for a fresh touch. Enjoy!

Hoisin Steak Stir-Fry is an easy 30-minute dinner made with tender beef, mushrooms, bell pepper, and a rich hoisin sauce. Perfect with rice or noodles.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 3/4 lb thin beef (steak) strips
  • 9 oz cremini mushrooms
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 bunch green onions
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 inch fresh ginger
  • White rice, or noodles
  • Vegetable oil
  • Sesame seeds, optional
  • Cashews (optional)

Instructions

  1. Marinate the beef strips with 2 to 3 tablespoons oyster sauce and 1 tablespoon soy sauce. Set aside.
  2. Finely chop the garlic and grate about 1 inch fresh ginger.
  3. Slice the cremini mushrooms into quarters or slices, the red bell pepper into thin strips, and the green onions into larger pieces.
  4. Heat a splash of vegetable oil in a wok and stir-fry the beef over high heat for no more than 2 minutes. Remove from the wok and set aside, loosely covered with foil.
  5. Add a bit more oil to the wok and stir-fry the mushrooms, green onions, and bell pepper over high heat for about 5 to 7 minutes, until the mushrooms release most of their moisture.
  6. Add the fresh ginger and garlic and stir-fry for another minute.
  7. Return the beef to the wok along with the hoisin sauce and stir-fry for another 2 to 3 minutes, tossing constantly. Serve right away with white rice or noodles and sprinkle with sesame seeds if you like.
